Many doctors prescribe tramadol to treat patients who suffer from medium to severe pain. The drug is also very effective at treating pain caused by dental or surgical operations, as well as joint, cancer-related and back pain. Basically, tramadol is used as a pain reliever, but it should only be taken with a doctor’s prescription.

Grünenthal, a German pharmaceutical company, first created tramadol, and the company retains the patent for this drug. Tramadol has been used for clinical purposes in Germany for the past three decades, but the company has recently permitted other pharmaceutical companies to market the drug under different names.

Because of its unique composition that affects a human’s serotonergic, GABAergic and noradrenergic systems, tramadol is an effective pain reliever. The drug has a direct effect on the body’s neurotransmitters and is meant to reduce pain, rather than induce sedation. If administered intravenously or intramuscularly, tramadol can effectively treat postoperative pain.

Doctors suggest taking oral tramadol tablets before or after meals. The tablet are normally available in 50 to 100 mg doses, but doctors recommend a maximum daily dosage of 400 mg. If you suffer from spasm disorders, weak liver or kidneys or seizures, you should not take tramadol. Research is still in progress to determine the safety of the drug for women who are breast-feeding or pregnant and for children younger than 16.

Excessive sleep and drowsiness are some of the possible side effects of taking tramadol. The World Health Organization approves taking the drug for managing cancer pain during stage II cancer. Because tramadol works within an hour of consumption, the drug is often prescribed to patients who experience intense pain.
